Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base (PharmGKB)
Dr. Russ Altman is the principal investigator of a U-01 entitled “PharmGKB: Catalyzing Pharmacogenetics Research,” which supports the creation and utilization of a Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base ( PharmGKB). The knowledge base is charged with collecting, organizing and disseminating analysis tools for public pharmacogenomics data with the goal of relating variation in human genetics to variation in patient response to drugs.
Among its many functions, PharmGKB:
- holds genotype variation data for genes relevant to drug metabolism and drug action
- contains phenotype variation related to drug response
- manages information about pathways of drug action and metabolism and curates the published literature on pharmacogenomics
With respect to cancer, PharmGKB already has data sets addressing variation in the response to irinotecan, tamoxifen and other anti-neoplastics. Cancer-related phenotypes that have been measured include those related to GI cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and breast cancer.
