Colorectal Cancer

In a in a long-term collaboration with the Monterey County Health Department, studying cancer risk factors and screening in Latino women and men, Dr. Winkleby, has identified high rates of cervical and breast cancer screening among women, low rates of colorectal cancer screening, and high rates of obesity in a community and agriculture labor camp sample of Mexican American adults. She has also documented 10-year changes in cancer-related health behaviors, risk factors, and screening practices related to colorectal cancer in a similar community based sample. A five-year intervention, based on these findings, is now in process (Ethnicity Dis 13:376, 2003; Ethnicity Health, 2006).

The results of 7 years of calcium & vitamin D supplementation in preventing colorectal cancer in a trial of 36,000 postmenopausal women were published in February 2006 (NEJM 2006, Feb 16).

In 2005, Dr. West received funding to recruit African American and Japanese families as part of a NCI grant to the University of Hawaii to pull additional minority families into this international consortium database. Over the five years of this award, an estimated 130 African-American and 140 Japanese-American families will be recruited into this consortium database and will be available to Population Sciences members. Dr. Gomez has also conducted analyses of survival using SEER data, finding that when considered separately, Filipino men tend to be diagnosed with later stage of prostate and colorectal cancer, explaining their worse survival relative to non-Hispanic whites, while Chinese and Japanese experience better survival than whites. Among women, Chinese women appeared to have slightly worse survival than white women following diagnosis of colorectal cancer, while survival disparities were not seen for Filipina or Japanese women (Cancer 94:1175-82, 2002; Arch of Intern Med 163:631-2, 2003). Drs. Gomez and O'Malley are currently completing an analysis of factors associated with the above racial/ethnic variations in colorectal cancer survival using the linked SEER-Medicare data.
