Major Areas of Research
Etiology
Breast CancerCancer Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention and Control researchers advance breast cancer prevention through investigation into genetic susceptibility factors, early life exposures and modifiable lifestyle factors such as physical activity, diet, reproductive factors and breast-feeding. Researchers are additionally interested in understanding the racial/ethnic differences across these risk factors. Etiological studies currently underway include:
- Interactions between BRCA mutation carriers and the following five risk factors: history of oral contraceptive use, history of diagnostic or therapeutic chest irradiation prior to diagnosis, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and physical activity patterns during puberty, young adulthood and middle age
- Large population-based studies of breast cancer etiology, including a case-control study of breast cancer in 5,000 Latina, African-American and white women
- A genome-wide association study of breast cancer cases and controls, using single-nucleotide-polymorphism technology implemented by the Stanford Genome Technology Center (SGTC) Breast Cancer Genetics Video

- The relationship between nutrition and the development of hormonally-dependent cancers in women
- Possible links of breast cancer with childhood infection, asthma and allergy development and EBV tumor cell presence
- Geographic variations in breast cancer incidence to uncover new potential causes
