Scientific Focus

Current Research Interests

My laboratory research interest focuses on the identification of biomarkers for prognosis in patients with head & neck or lung cancers. Current research goals are: to validate the prognostic significance of certain hypoxia markers using clinical samples from a randomized phase III clinical trial and to monitor the tumor burden of HPV-related head & neck cancers during therapy by tracking circulating HPV DNA in the blood. We are also looking to determine if plasma levels of MiR 210’s can predict tumor hypoxia in head and neck cancers, to dissect the function of Osteopontin in tumor progression, to target Galectin-1 (an immunomodulator) in combination with radiation in solid tumors, and to identify a microRNA signature in lung cancer. Additionally we are working to isolate human salivary gland stem cells for salivary gland function rescue after head & neck radiation therapy.
I am also conducting a number of clinical trials specifically in patients with head and neck cancer. I am conducting a multi-site phase II study of Lapatinib plus radiation for head & neck cancer patients who cannot tolerate chemotherapy, and participating in several RTOG cooperative group studies for this disease site.
