Study of the impact of tumor bearing regional lymph nodes in solid tumors and immune profile of the tumor draining lymph nodes. Metabolic tumor detection and intraoperative detection using specially designed detection probes. Gene and Protein profile of primary melanoma and breast tumors including stem cell analysis.

Cosmetic surgery and the study of changes associated with the aging appearance of the face. 1. Analysis and development of new procedures for aesthetic surgery of the face 2. Analysis of the changes the face undergoes with age in the bone and soft tissues 3. Analysis of techniques for rhinoplasty 4. Evaluation of optimal techniques for aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery

Clinical research in cutaneous lymphomas, especially, mycosis fungoides; studies of prognostic factors, long-term survival results, and effects of therapies. Collaborative research with Departments of Pathology and Oncology in basic mechanisms of cutaneous lymphomas. Clinical trials of new investigative therapies for various dermatologic conditions or clinical trials of known therapies for new indications.

Hedgehog signaling has been implicated in the induction or maintenance of up to 25% of human tumors and a variety of birth defects. Our lab studies Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling in normal hair follicle development and in the pathogenesis of the most common human tumor, basal cell carcinoma (BCCs) of the skin. We are interested in how the local stromal environment regulates hedgehog signaling and hair follicle or tumor growth and invasion.

Clinical Interests: general oncology, head and neck cancer Research Interests: chemoprevention trials and combined modality approaches to head and neck cancer

1) Early detection of melanoma and melanoma precursors with digital dermoscopy. 2) Secondary melanoma prevention involving targeted skin cancer screening, enhanced professional and public education to improve melanoma awareness, and chemoprevention in high-risk groups. 3) National dermatologist liaison to the ECOG Melanoma Committee and Co-founder/Co-Director of the Melanoma Prevention Working Group, an interdisciplinary Intergroup collaboration dedicated to cancer control and prevention.

My research focuses on finding new ways to treat and prevent non-melanoma skin cancer. I am committed to bringing laboratory-based insights to benefit our patients. I am interested in these questions: 1. How do we prevent skin cancer? 2. What is the relationship between sunlight, vitamin D, and skin cancer risk? 3. Can we target certain tumor signaling pathways (Hedgehog pathway) to treat basal cell carcinomas - the most common cancer in the US?
