Stanford breast cancer expert named National Physician
of the Year
Robert W. Carlson, MD, professor of medicine – oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine, has been named a 2008 National Physician of the Year by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. Dr. Carlson was honored at a dinner at the Manhattan Center in New York on March 18. The event recognizes both the excellence of the honorees and the excellence of the many thousands of top physicians in the United States.
Dr. Carlson, an oncologist and researcher at the Stanford Cancer Center, has devoted his career to the improvement in the care and treatment of breast cancer. His research encompasses studies in breast cancer prevention, investigational chemotherapeutics and endocrine drugs, psychosocial interventions and the use of computer-based systems to assist physicians in delivering optimal care.
He chairs the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Breast Cancer Guidelines Panel that develops the most widely used evidence-based breast cancer guidelines in the world. He also co-chairs the Treatment Guidelines and Allocation of Resources Panel of the Breast Health Global Initiative, a group that develops resource-stratified breast cancer guidelines for countries with limited resources.
Dr. Carlson is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research and the European Society of Medical Oncology, and has served on numerous national committees and panels.
