Administrative Supplements to Advance Special Translational Research Acceleration Projects on Immune Response Modifiers Currently Funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Eligibility Requirements: PIs are encouraged to contacted the NCI Program Official for their individual existing grant
The requests for Administrative Supplements must be based on eligible “parent” awards that are relevant to translational research on immune response modifiers for cancer prevention and/or therapy.
The requestor for each project or subproject component must be the current Principal Investigator (PI) on the eligible parent award.
The parent award must be an active, NCI-funded grant or cooperative agreement using one of the following mechanisms: R01; P01; P30; P50; U01; U10; U19; or U54.
The parent grant must have at least 2 (full) years of funding remaining at the time of award of an administrative supplement. Requests for no-cost extensions on the parent grant to accommodate a STRAP supplement will not be granted.
Administrative supplements may be requested for up to 1 year (see further important information in the NCI IRM STRAP Program Guidelines athttp://ccct.cancer.gov/STRAP_Program ).
The proposed translational activity must remain within the overall scope of the active “parent” award but must also reflect the outlined developmental milestones defined for the IRM pathway.
The proposed activities are expected to bring the prevention or therapy studies under development to the stage of clinical testing.

Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (ISCBRM)
CIRM Scholar Training Grant--Request for Applications

The Stanford University School of Medicine Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (ISCBRM) is requesting applications for training grant positions for full time research for up to two years; funding for up to six scholars in the following three categories:

Predoctoral Scholars (MD, MD/PhD, or PhD) (up to two positions)
Postdoctoral Scholars (PhD) (up to two positions)
MD Research Scholars (up to two positions)

Application deadline: July 16, 2010, noon
Submit applications to Amy Erickson, per the instructions at the following webpage.
The respective committees will meet in late-July/early-August with the goal of selecting up to six scholars to start their training on Oct. 1, 2009/Autumn Quarter for predoctoral applicants.

Application forms for EACH position category can be downloaded from:
http://stemcell.stanford.edu/education/training_grants.html

Eligibility
CIRM Scholars do not have to be U.S. citizens. However, foreign scholars must have visas that allow stipend support (typically a J-1 & F-1 visa). H1-B and TN visa holders are NOT eligible.
Predoctoral Scholars--can be either MD/PhD, PhD graduate students in programs in Biosciences or Engineering, etc., or can be medical students at Stanford and must have a Stanford identified advisor.
Postdoctoral Scholars (PhD) can be from Biosciences, Bioengineering and other fields here at Stanford and must have a Stanford identified mentor.
MD Research Scholars (MD)--candidates may have completed their MD, completed or be currently in residency or fellowship programs, or be finished with their clinical training. They must have a Stanford-identified mentor and an affiliation with the mentor's lab. This application is for a full-time research fellowship; CIRM guidelines state that clinical trainees may not expend more than 10 to 20 percent of their appointment time on clinical duties that are unrelated to, or independent of, the CIRM training program.
NOTE: Stanford faculty, research associates, research scientists, Instructors, are not eligible to be CIRM Scholars.

Program Overview
Each CIRM Scholar will carry out his or her research under the direction of a mentor working on stem cell biology or related problems and will spend the vast majority of time in the mentor’s laboratory. In addition, each CIRM Scholar will choose a co-mentor, a physician or physician-scientist with research and/or clinical interests that complement those of the mentor, to expose the CIRM Scholar to approaches in both basic science and translational disciplines. For example, a trainee working with a mentor focused on neural stem cells may have a co-mentor who works in translational research relating to neurology or neurosurgery. Each CIRM Scholar will attend the group meetings of the mentor and the co-mentor. Each scholar will be reviewed and reappointment decisions will be made on a yearly basis.

Special aspects of the CIRM Scholars positions
A mentor and co-mentor from non-overlapping fields (i.e., a surgeon-scientist and a stem cell biologist)
Several required courses
A two-week clinical immersion for non-MD scholars in the area of medicine that most closely relates to your area of research

Training will start Academic Year 2010/2011 and will be limited to 24 months, but should not be less than 12 consecutive months. An awarded trainee position cannot be shared among multiple individuals. CIRM expects trainees to devote full time to training activities, which, in addition to their research, may include relevant course work, workshops, and scientific conferences. Clinical trainees are expected to confine clinical duties to those that are an integral part of their training experience.

Predoctoral Scholars: CIRM pays Tuition, Stipend, Health Insurance (100percent of basic for the trainee and family if not otherwise covered by the grantee institution) and some Research/Administration Support

*Postdoctoral Scholars: CIRM pays Stipend, Health Insurance (100 percent of basic for the trainee and family if not otherwise covered by the grantee institution) and some Research/Administration Support

MD Research Scholar: CIRM pays Stipend, Health Insurance (100 percent of basic for the trainee and family if not otherwise covered by the grantee institution) and some Research/Administration Support

*Note: Stipend levels will be commensurate with the individual's experience and the level of training.

Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence Focused on Therapy Response (CCNE-TR) Pilot Projects
Deadline: Friday, July 9, 2010 (see "Submitting an Application" below)
Purpose: The Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence Focused on Therapy Response (CCNE-TR) is soliciting new Pilot Projects from established investigators. The vision of CCNE-TR is to bring together researchers from various disciplines to form synergistic teams that will make significant advances in developing and validating nanotechnology that will impact cancer diagnosis, therapy and management. Members of these teams will include trainees that will gain access to a highly multidisciplinary experience, and who will become well equipped to establish independent, multidisciplinary research programs. Projects will mainly include those that have a high potential for linking nanotechnology to pre-clinical imaging models for improved cancer patient management. This program is funded through the NIH/NCI U54 grant.

Amount of Funding/Budget Information:
Applicants may request from $20,000 - $30,000 in total direct costs for a nine-month duration of the supplemental Pilot Projects under this program.

Up to three applicants will be selected for funding. Each Pilot Project will be a nine-month project and continuation of a project beyond its first year will be contingent upon the success of the previous year. Once all required documents are received, the selected candidates will have a funding period from 8/1/2010 – 4/30/2011.

Eligibility
Established investigators (Stanford faculty with UTL, MCL or NTLR appointments). Preference will be given to those investigators who are not currently involved with CCNE-TR. All applications, regardless of relationship to CCNE-TR, will undergo the same level of scrutiny before being identified as an appropriate Pilot Project.

Submitting an Application

By Friday, July 9, 2010, applicants should submit one electronic copy as an e-mail attachment in PDF format to Billie Robles in the Radiology Department at brobles@stanford.edu
