January 2010 Funding Opportunities

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Clinical Investigator Award
Internal School of Medicine deadline:
 Jan. 11, 2010, 4 pm

Program announcement: http://www.damonrunyon.org/for_scientists/categories/category/awards/

The Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award supports young physician-scientists conducting patient-oriented cancer research. The goal is to increase the number of physicians capable of moving seamlessly between the laboratory and the patient's bedside in search of breakthrough treatments.   The Clinical Investigator Award program is specifically intended to provide outstanding young physicians with the resources and training structure essential to becoming independent clinical investigators.

The 3-year, $450,000 Award will provide funding of $150,000 annually ($100,000 stipend and $50,000 research allowance) to the awardee's institution for the specific support of the Clinical Investigator.  A portion of the stipend may be applied to research costs upon request. No part of this award can be used for indirect costs or institutional overheard.

This year, the Stanford Cancer Center Internal Review Committee will select 3 applicants to represent the School of Medicine.

Eli Lilly and Company is the founding sponsor of the Clinical Investigator Award and continues to generously support the program with Siemens Medical Solutions, Novartis, Genentech and Merck. In light of its partnership with Siemens Medical Solutions, the Foundation is interested in candidates who, in addition to working in translational clinical oncology, conduct research relating to or using imaging technologies and molecular imaging in cancer. The sponsor’s deadline is March 1, 2010.

Selection Criteria
• Excellence of the applicant and mentor.
• Innovation, creativity, quality and originality of the research proposal.
• Commitment of the mentor and institution to the development and training of the applicant as an independent clinical research investigator.
• Evidence of the applicant's commitment to clinical translational and/or cancer prevention research and their ability to apply advances in laboratory research to clinical problems.
• Importance of the proposed research to the field of cancer and/or cancer prevention.
• Adherence of the proposal to the definition of clinical research (as defined by this announcement)
• Adherence to the "Handshake Rule," meaning that the physician will meet each patient in his/her research studies.

By Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, 4 pm, please send one PDF file containing the following in the order listed below (title page, scanned copy of the original signed nomination letter, research proposal, biosketch, other support) to Denise Baughman, Project Manager at the Cancer Center at: deniseb@stanford.edu.

No budgets or SU-42 forms are required for the internal review process.  You do not need to involve your institutional representative (RPM/RMG, OSR).

2010 JMNMF Research Scholar Award Invitation
Jan. 15, 2010 Application Deadline

In 2006, the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation (JMNMF) established the JMNMF Research Scholar Award to grow further interest and progress in melanoma research among graduate students and cancer research institutions. Expanded from one to four Awards in 2009, the goal of this funding award is to encourage the best and most promising graduate students to choose melanoma research as their professional career path.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 program through the Jan. 15, 2010 deadline. To be considered, application by qualified graduate student candidates should be submitted to include a brief description of their melanoma research program under way, noting key objectives and expected outcomes, timelines and any other pertinent information.

Further information is available by contacting JMNMF directly: contact@melanomaresearch.org.
