2011 NIH Director's Pioneer Award Program (DP1) RFA-RM-10-008
NIH Roadmap Initiative

SUMMARY: Funding opportunity for Stanford faculty with PI eligibility. Unlimited applicants are permitted. Pioneer Awards are designed to support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering – and possibly transforming – approaches to major challenges in biomedical and behavioral research. Biomedical and behavioral research is defined broadly in this announcement as encompassing scientific investigations in the biological, behavioral, clinical, social, physical, chemical, computational, engineering and mathematical sciences that have the potential to improve the public health.

Program Announcement:

To view previous recipients and their scientific proposal summaries:
There were four Stanford recipients in 2009, for example:
http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer/AwardRecipients.aspx

Amount of funding: $500,000 direct costs/yr for five years ($2.5M total direct costs plus indirects)

Application Due Date(s): Sept. 13, 2010* via grants.gov
You must submit your electronic PDRF form and submit your application via Stanford's eSubmit system for your Institutional Representative* at least five working days or one calendar week prior to the sponsor's deadline.
*School of Medicine: RPM department assignments: http://med.stanford.edu/rmg/rpmmaster.html
*H&S, Engineering: Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) dept. assignments: http://ora.stanford.edu/ora/osr/contact.asp

Getting started: grants.gov at Stanford resource webpage:
http://ora.stanford.edu/grantsgov/started.asp

Eligibility:
Stanford faculty with PI eligibility. Only one PI can be designated for each application.

Pioneer awardees are required to commit the major portion (at least 51%) of their research effort* to activities supported by the Pioneer Award program. Those who will not be able to meet this requirement should not submit applications. [*Effort expended toward teaching, administrative, or clinical duties should not be included in this calculation.]

Investigators who were not selected for an award in prior years may submit applications this year; however, all applications must be submitted as new applications regardless of any previous submission to the program.

To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect ideas substantially different from those already being pursued in the investigator’s laboratory or elsewhere. The program is not intended to expand the funding of persons already well supported for the proposed project. While a new research direction may have as its foundation the applicant’s prior work and expertise, it cannot be an obvious extension or scaling up of a current research enterprise.

Rather, a new research direction must reflect a fundamental new insight into the solution of a problem, which may derive from the development of exceptionally innovative approaches and/or from the posing of radically unconventional hypotheses. Applications for projects that are extensions of ongoing research should not be submitted.

Reminder:
Clinical Instructors, Clinical Educator Line/Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate or Clinical Professors are not eligible to be PIs for sponsored projects.
Clinical Assist/Assoc/Prof can request PI waivers to be PIs for certain multi-site industry sponsored clinical trials. http://med.stanford.edu/rmg/piwaiver.html

Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Scienceshttp://www.pewtrusts.org/our_work_category.aspx?id=194

Deadlines: Internal School of Medicine deadline:  Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, 4 pm
Dean of Research deadline (for submission of each school's three nominees):  noon, Aug. 31, 2010
Sponsor deadline:  Nov. 1, 2010

Contact the following individuals for your respective school's internal due dates:

Engineering: Terri Tippets,  ttippets@stanford.edu
Humanities and Sciences: Kristi Geerke, geerke@stanford.edu
Medicine: Jeanne Heschele, jheschele@stanford.edu

Amount of funding:  $60,000/year for 4 years   ($240,000 total). Not more than 8% of the total award may be deducted for overhead costs (22 awards will be made in 2011).

Program Description/Purpose:

This program is designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise in basic and clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health.   The funding for these awards is provided by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The award is intended to provide assured support, during their earlier years, for junior members of the faculty as they establish their laboratories. It is hoped that the assurance provided through the Program will encourage successful applicants to be more venturesome in their research and future applications for support than would otherwise be likely.

Eligibility:

As of November 1, 2010, candidates must hold full time appointments at the rank of assistant professor or the equivalent on the faculty of the sponsoring institution.  This is a Pew requirement: if your candidate's formal assistant professor appointment will not be finalized by the Provost’s office until after November 1, your candidate will not be eligible until the next year to submit an internal proposal.

On July 1, 2011, they must not have been in such an appointment for more than three years, whether such appointments were on a tenure track. This rule is not flexible. This time may have been spent at more than one institution. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies or in work toward board certification does not count as part of this three-year limit. [Stanford clarification:  assistant professors with NTLR (Research line), MCL or UTL appointments are permitted.   Instructors, Clinical Educator line or Clinical Assistant professors are not eligible.]

Pew Scholars must spend at least 80% of their time in work related to the accomplishment of their overall research goals. However, Pew provides flexible support to the overall research aims of the scholar and does not monitor or restrict percentage of effort or time of Pew Scholars.

Candidates should, on basis of performance during education and training, have outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. Strong proposals will demonstrate particularly creative and innovative approaches. Risk-taking is encouraged. The major elements upon which selection of the successful candidates will be based are a detailed description of the work the applicant proposes to undertake, evaluations of earlier performance from previous mentors, and notable past accomplishments, including honors, awards and publications. In evaluating the candidates, the national advisory committee gives considerable weight to evidence that the candidate is an independent investigator and to significant published work.

Scholars may not simultaneously be supported by similar private foundation awards in excess of $50,000 a year for the first two years of their Pew scholarship. Funding from the NIH, government sources, and grants from nonprofit associations such as the American Cancer Society do not pose a conflict with the Pew award. If you have any questions about your other funding, please contact Elizabeth Lasensky in the Dean of Research Office at lasensky@stanford.edu. (Elizabeth is the liaison with the Pew Program official.)
