July 2011 Cancer Institute Bulletin

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

I’d again like to remind you again that the Stanford Cancer Center has changed its name to the Stanford Cancer Institute.  The change conveys the Institute’s involvement in the full span of cancer-related activities occurring at Stanford University, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.  The name Stanford Clinical Cancer Center will be used for our outpatient cancer care facility

One new initiative is a (more) comprehensive Stanford cancer calendar.  We are trying to identify all cancer related seminars and events occurring at Stanford and put them in a single calendar.  There is a link on our home page and the calendar can be found at http://cancer.stanford.edu/calendar.html.  If you would like to add events to the calendar please notify us at tonyam@stanford.edu.

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center.  The Center provides comprehensive, compassionate care for women with breast and gynecologic cancers in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.  Additional information can be found at http://cancer.stanford.edu/womenscenter/.

CANCER CENTER GRANT OPPORTUNITIES (DCRAs and V Foundation)

We are sorry to announce a delay in the naming of the DCRA awards. We received over 50 applications and complications in travel schedules have prevented us from reviewing the proposals as promptly as we would have liked.  We hope to announce the awards in early August.

Jeffrey Norton, MD, professor of surgery, was honored with the Alwin C. Rambar-James B.D. Mark Award for Excellence in Patient Care, which recognizes a member of the medical faculty for compassion in working with patients and their families, excellence in providing medical treatment, and effectiveness and pleasantness in interactions with patient-care staff. The annual award was established in 1985 to honor the late Rambar, MD, a Chicago pediatrician long associated with the medical school and was renamed in 1997 to include Mark, MD, a Stanford thoracic surgeon and professor emeritus who was also Rambar’s son-in-law.
