December 2011 Cancer Institute Bulletin

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

A major focus over the past 10 months has been the development of a strategic plan for cancer services that addresses the five major areas outlined for us by the Joint Planning Committee: Discovery and Innovation; Quality, Patient Experience, Pre-eminence, and Business Strategy.

With input from many of you, we have outlined a comprehensive approach to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer in patients under the following mandate: “Translate Stanford discoveries into personalized cancer identification, prevention, and coordinated care”. The areas that we addressed range from early discovery and precision diagnosis to cancer survivorship and palliative care. As we develop specific funding requests based on this plan, we will keep you informed of our priorities for moving forward. We are “bullish” about the future directions of cancer research and care at Stanford, but much work remains to be done to reach our full potential. We look forward to obtaining further input from you and to obtaining your assistance as we move forward.
