DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

Another reminder about our (more) comprehensive Stanford cancer calendar.  We are trying to identify all cancer related seminars and events occurring at Stanford and put them in a single calendar.  There is a link on our home page and the calendar can be found at http://cancer.stanford.edu/calendar.html.  If you would like to add events to the calendar please notify us at tonyam@stanford.edu.

On July 25 there was a formal groundbreaking for the new Jill and John Freidenrich Translational Research Building.  We expect the building to be completed by the Fall of 2012 and it will provide new space to conduct cancer related clinical trials.  It will also provide an opportunity to consolidate Cancer Clinical Trials Office staff, which is currently scattered over several locations.  We expect the new facility will dramatically improve our ability to conduct cancer related clinical trials.   A more complete description of opening ceremony can be found at http://med.stanford.edu/ism/2011/july/freidenrich.html.

DCRAs

We are expecting to announce the recipient of Cancer Institute seed grants by August 15.

Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program

The Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program's (PRCRP) vision is to improve quality of life by decreasing the impact of cancer on service members, their families, and the American public.  This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11) Defense Appropriation Act provides for $16 million to the DOD PRCRP to research cancers not addressed in breast, prostate, lung (excluding mesothelioma), and ovarian cancer research programs currently executed and managed by the Office of the CDMRP.  The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research for the following topic areas:

Visionary Postdoctoral fellowship Awards of $240,000 for direct costs

All applications must conform to the program announcement and general application instructions that are available for electronic downloading from the Grants.gov website.  The application package containing the required forms for this award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (https://cdmrp.org) prior to August 10, 2011.  A listing of all USAMRMC funding opportunities can be obtained on the Grants.gov website by performing a basic search using CFDA Number 12.420.

Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov.  Requests for email notification of the release of the program announcements may be sent to help@cdmrp.org.  For more information about the PRCRP or other CDMRP-sponsored programs, please visit the CDMRP website (http://cdmrp.army.mil).
