Diagnosis and Treatment of Non-Invasive Breast Cancer

Better detection of breast cancer means that more women are being diagnosed with the earliest noninvasive stages of disease or even with precancerous breast conditions. Noninvasive breast cancer is also called cancer in situ (Latin for "in place") or stage 0 breast cancer.

Because diagnosis at this stage means that the cancerous or abnormal cells have not spread beyond the breast ducts or lobules, patient outcomes are very positive.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common form of noninvasive breast cancer, and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is a common noninvasive condition that can be a precursor to breast cancer.
