Stanford Cancer Center
Stanford Cancer Center
Opened in March 2004, the Stanford Cancer Center offers the latest advances in patient-focused treatment in a warm and supportive environment. Consolidating the medical center’s resources for diagnosing and treating cancer, the new cancer center enhances Stanford’s team approach to care while enabling patients to stay in one location for procedures and tests.
Patient Comfort
Designed to welcome patients in a healing environment, the new 150,000-square-foot facility is more than double the space previously dedicated to outpatient cancer care. When patients enter, they are greeted by escorts who guide them through a bright and spacious atrium to their appointment, which, if they wish, begins with a 15-minute massage.
Simple but thoughtful amenities help make time spent in the Cancer Center less stressful and more efficient, such as valet parking, concierge services, an on-site pharmacy, a café, a health library, a meditation room, Internet-connected computers and a specialty shop to address the needs of patients and their families.
Interdisciplinary Care
The building’s design not only pampers patients but encourages interdisciplinary clinical interactions. Fifty-nine specially designed clinic rooms and 3 procedure rooms are housed according to 14 disease-specific management programs.
Within each program, interdisciplinary teams work together to plan a customized treatment strategy for each patient. Each team may include experts in:
medical oncology - hematology
- bone marrow transplantation
- radiation oncology
- urologic oncology
- thoracic oncology
- head and neck
- neurosurgery
- neuro-oncology
- endocrinology
- gynecologic oncology
- surgical oncology
- dermatology
- plastic surgery
- radiology services
- genetics
State-of-the-art Equipment
The center rapidly invests in new technologies that have been shown to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment, ensuring that our patients have access to the best care possible. The center’s state-of-the-art facilities include:
- Two CyberKnife units, which combine computerized imaging with radiation therapy to precisely deliver radiation in the three-dimensionally pattern of a tumor
- Five state-of-the-art linear accelerators, including a Varian Trilogy unit for conformal and stereotactic treatments with kilovoltage-based CT image guidance
- Digital-radiographic, conventional CT and PET/CT simulators to allow doctors to simultaneously view anatomical and biological tumor information
- Digital mammography services to enable CAD analysis of mammograms, which has been proven to increase diagnostic accuracy
- State-of-the art Infusion Treatment/Apheresis center, open seven days a week, from 12 to 16 hours daily, so patients can come for treatment at their convenience.
Clinical Research and Innovation
The building supports the translational mission of the SCC, bringing together clinicians and researchers to collaborate on the behalf of patients.
Housing a tumor registry, a clinical research suite and conference rooms, the center serves as the medical center’s hub for clinical trials of novel cancer therapies and enhances its ability to bring promising research discoveries into clinical practice.
